Review exploreASEAN 2016/2017

exploreASEAN’s second edition has finished, the project is handed over to a new team that is looking forward to visiting more of the striving nations of Southeast Asia. This article presents the delegation rating for the activities in ASEAN and gives an excellent insight into the last 12 months. The participants of exploreASEAN experienced great talks and company visits, were challenged by a full but unique and exciting onsite seminar and…

…emitted more than 257 tons of CO2! An amount which was fully balanced by a considerable investment into a waterpower project in Indonesia and raised awareness for the CO2 emissions of the international student projects at the University of Applied Sciences and Arts Northwestern Switzerland.

The ranking of the onsite seminar starts with the accommodation. The best hotel of this year’s onsite seminar was located in the fast-growing business center of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City. Between numerous impressive skyscrapers, the top-rated Hotel Continental Saigon represents the historic side of the city with its French architecture. The location is absolutely fantastic, offering plenty of opportunities to feel and experience the city.

The best business event – based on the delegation rating – was not the second-rated delicious lunch with the Swiss business forum in the Sheraton Grand Hotel in Jakarta or the also second-rated visit of the students at the Institut Teknologi Bandung. It was the impressive company visit at Fashion Garments Ltd., a few hours outside of Ho Chi Minh City. For this company, thousands of employees produce the latest designs for brands like Tommy Hilfiger, PINK of Victoria’s Secret, Nike, Reebok and many more. However, to visit the students of the Institut Teknologi Bandung, Indonesia will be in everyone’s memory as well and received best ratings as we have found many new friends on the other side of the globe.

The best leisure activity was the well-deserved weekend trip to the Ha Long Bay with a beautiful boat on which the 27 participants of exploreASEAN could spend a night, surrounded by the fantastic landscape of northern Vietnam. After experiencing the boiling temperatures in the capital city Hanoi, the cool wind on the sea was refreshing and relaxing. Water happens to be much appreciated by the delegation; the kayak tour in the Mekong Delta was a wonderful experience as well.

Later, exploreASEAN 2016-2017 continued to prolong the project period and was thrilled to welcome representatives of the Embassies of the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand and Malaysia to share their views on ASEAN and its golden anniversary.

Besides these highlights, we would like to mention the environmental impact of this project as 257 tons of CO2 were emitted from working and travelling in the past 12 months. From the first day of exploreASEAN two years ago, this project was committed to take responsibility by balancing all emissions of the preparatory seminar, onsite seminar and all energy used to maintain the webserver and to produce the food and paper we have used. Clearly, it does not make emissions undone but it reduces their severity and gives consumption a fair price which is unique in the family of the international student projects.

Finally, a last huge thank you goes to all our partners, sponsors and to the School of Business FHNW for the incredible support throughout this year! Without their help it had not been possible to now sum up another very successful edition of exploreASEAN!
