In the heart of the ASEAN community and business networking in Jakarta
Wednesday 12 of April 2017
The exploreASEAN delegation arrived at the Association of Southeast Asian Nations’ (ASEAN) headquarter in Jakarta in the morning. After a few pictures were taken, we were invited into the community’s official library where we had the chance to look at some historical items and to read interesting books about ASEAN in the library. The exploreASEAN delegation was then led into a very spacious conference room.
Senior Officer for Education, Youth and Sports Division, Mr Remy Rohadian, proceeded to give us a short, yet extremely insightful presentation about the ASEAN region, the education and the youth in Southeast Asia while emphasizing on the importance of the exchange of students between countries.
While Switzerland is facing the challenge of an elderly population, the ASEAN region accounts, on average, 60% of its population to the youth, ranging between 15 to 35 years. For those, in Indonesia alone there are 4’000 institutions of higher education and 15 million enrolled students (2012). Furthermore, higher education serves as catalyst of economic development, a determinant of human development and enhances the mutual understanding while promoting regional identity. He believes that the exchange between the students in higher education does not only contribute to the academic achievements, but that it is an important experience that enriches one’s cultural horizon and benefits the development of the country. By applying and developing programs and frameworks with a number of countries, also outside of Southeast Asia , At the end, he was delighted to see many young students with numerous questions and the ASEAN Secretariat even shared a Facebook post about our visit!
For the afternoon, a so called “Luncheon” together with the Swiss Business Forum (SBF) at the Sheraton Grand Hotel was planned. The event was organized by the Chairman of the Swiss Business Forum, Dr Handoko Widjaja and Mr Richard Suter, General Manager of the Sheraton Grand Hotel Jakarta. We were further joined by Mr Erwin Spichtig, CEO of Sandmaster, Mr Heinz Hedinger, Consultant at Brückner Group and Mr Adrien Kehlstadt of DKSH Indonesia.
It was the perfect opportunity to network and to learn more about the challenges of doing business in Indonesia from a business point of view. After a short small talk session, the exploreASEAN project team had the opportunity to present their project to the Swiss Business Forum. We then had the possibility to have an informal exchange over a delicious lunch with the members of the SBF.
After the event, our delegation was free to visit the Gandaria shopping mall, located very close to the Sheraton Grand Hotel. Some of our delegation members dug even deeper into the local culture and visited the nearby Fashion Symphony show for the newest trends in handmade design for women.
For the next destination Hanoi, the exploreASEAN project organized the company visit at the ABB Bac Ninh branch and bought tickets for a water puppets show, a local and typical Vietnamese performance.
